Innovation Opportunities

Seeking innovative solutions for:

Yan Sheng

Senior Vice President, Head of China

Business Bio  LinkedIn Profile

I was born in Shanghai but moved to Beijing as a boy during the chaotic time of the Culture Revolution, from 1966-1976.  Academics were de-emphasized then, but I was very fortunate to have loving medical doctor parents who shared their broad curiosity, exposing me to everything from photography to nature, science, history, and music.  You see, I was different from the other kids. I experienced many wonderful things–parks, movies, even museums, which were very rare then in China–and I learned many skills, like playing the violin (which I finally learned to enjoy in adulthood), wood working and carpentry.

Perhaps my diverse and stimulating childhood uniquely prepared me to seize a very unusual opportunity. In 1980 the Bank of China, the country’s only foreign exchange bank at the time, decided to recruit young talent to meet growing offshore business needs. The Culture Revolution had prevented there from being college graduates in 1980 (the college system was only restored in 1977), so the bank decided to hire a group of freshmen to split their days evenly between work and attending college courses at work.  Sure, we had professors from some of the best universities in Beijing, but I must admit I missed the typical college campus experience.

Identified as an elite talent in the bank group, I was assigned at age 22 to work as an exchange employee with what was then the second-largest German Bank, Dresdner Bank.  I was one of the earliest and definitely the youngest in China to get involved with foreign exchange and capital markets. I became a senior manager of Bank of China when I was 23 in New York, and remained a leading figure at the bank throughout my 10 years there. In 1992 I joined Lehman Brothers in New York and moved to Hong Kong, where I served from 1994 to 2008 in roles including Managing Director and Hong Kong Branch Manager of BankBoston (later FleetBoston, which was merged with Bank of America in 2003); and Managing Director, Head of China for AIG Financial Products. I led efforts to complete many innovative transactions for China-based global companies such as Huawei,  China Resources, China Merchant, and ENN. I left Wall Street in late 2008 when the global financial crisis hit, having dedicated over 25 years of work in finance in the US, Europe and China.

I joined Xinova’s predecessor in late 2008 as its President in China, heading operations in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. I set up my own company, PAIF in late 2015 but continue to work closely with Xinova and serve as Chairman for Xinova China.

Living overseas for so long, I witnessed the various evolutions of Made in the USA” alongside Made in Japan/Korea/Taiwan” and Made in China.” I wish to leverage the Xinova technology ecosystem towards helping China make world-class products, elevating Made in China” from its current connotation to a brand synonymous with quality.
