Business Bio  LinkedIn Profile

I’m a materials science nerd who discovered how communication skills could broaden my personal and professional horizons with the power of fluency in interdisciplinary vocabularies. First, upon reading Only the Paranoid Survive” and examining Andy Grove’s background, I realized that for deeply technical subjects, one needs to be conversant in the deeply technical. But the inflection point came in graduate school via the UW’s Technology Entrepreneurship Certificate program, where I learned communication requires a common vocabulary. So I took this opportunity to learn the vocabulary of innovation and entrepreneurship and, when time allowed, to do research in solid state physics and scaling functions between 2D and 3D magnetism.

My PhD research was in a field known as spintronics, combining semiconductors and magnetic materials. But the value-add of my grad school experience involved activities like participating in the Venture Capital Investment Competition, running the Science and Engineering Business Association, and the aforementioned MBA coursework a mental recess, if you will. Call it a manifestation of the impostor syndrome, but would you believe I was the president of my college’s largest party” club? In reality, it was a business where at 20 I was managing a half million-dollar annual budget for ski trips (oh yes, we had to raise that money, too).  This group was entrepreneurship at its core, and the experience was invaluable in leading a group of semi-volunteers on a mission but also in learning to speak across many disciplines.  In spite of all the fun we had, I’m proud that our peer group have grown to lead successful startups, pharmaceutical co-ops, and even an innovation studio for one of California’s largest health care providers.

These formative experiences made clear that the best place for me to add value was in enabling others to create that the business side of technology was a fascinating opportunity I could attack.  Enter Xinova. To paraphrase Richard Feynman, I don’t know everything, but I know everything is interesting.” There’s no better way for me to explain my life at Xinova, where I am working to solve the problem of growing our capability to scale revenue without a concomitant increase of expense.  We leverage a brilliant network of innovators, and my goal is to reduce our fixed costs, shifting the right components to something that is variable, leveraging the incredible skill and knowledge of our network.  This means we can ultimately deliver more to our customers, pay more to our innovators, and efficiently execute on many facets of innovation.  We are building an advanced platform for innovation to enable collaboration, risk sharing, investing, and trusted smart contracting that will allow a researcher in Switzerland to ideate with a designer in Toronto on a project originated by a customer in Japan for a market in Australia, with an investor from Singapore that furthers the interests of all parties involved.

A close friend phrased his optimism as if you do a job you love, you never work a day in your life” and I have spent the past eight years in this organization loving this job.  The people, the cultures, the creativity, and the raw opportunity that is represented by the technical challenges we seek to solve both for our customers and for our own operations makes it hard to consider ever doing work” when I could be doing this.  Everything here is interesting, and everything here is solvable.
