Ever since I was a young child, I took things apart and put them back together. I broke things, I fixed them – and then I broke them again. My formal introduction to the real world of technology started in high school when I learned to program computers without a computer. My calculus teacher taught us Fortran with pencil and paper, as you would any other human language.
My subsequent 35 year career has revolved around all aspects of innovation. I’ve been a scientist doing basic research at government nuclear labs around the world and I’ve worn a corporate suit at AT&T Bell Labs. I’ve built startups as an early stage Venture Capitalist at ARCH Venture partners and as the global head of technology for Intellectual Venture. And then I was part of the core team that built world leader in international open innovation – Xinova.
I have several patents, have written articles and book chapters and have lectured all over the world about technology innovation. I have served on many corporate, educational, and non-profit boards. I have a PhD in Physics from Yale, an MBA from Wharton and a BS in Math from William and Mary, where I was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. But none of that matters compared to what I learned taking things apart as a kid.
