Business Bio  LinkedIn Profile

Over my many years of working within multi-national corporations I’ve met some amazing people.  Like most professionals within technology driven companies they are very bright, innovative, and passionate.  However, their hard work often never gets commercialized.  Why?

I personally struggled with this problem for many years (or should I say over many ‘projects’?).  So, after two decades as an engineer I took that big step, turned in my calculator and moved to the world of business.  There I made two very insightful observations.

First, there are many reasons for failed projects ranging from ‘wrong technology for the market’ to ‘project execution mistakes’, but in almost every case, I discovered many ‘good’ innovations got lost or abandoned.  Corporations spend billions each year on R&D, but only a fraction of their spending result in new Products or Services that make it into the market.  Having both a technical and business background I started working within large and small companies to extract those valuable innovations and combine them with ‘right’ business practices to create successful monetization strategies.  This approach reduces the risk of project execution (as much of the R&D is already completed) as well as aligns an innovation to a specific market ‘need’ (if there is no market ‘need’, then don’t waste your time).

My second observation is that smaller companies are innovating much faster than larger companies.  With the easy access to information, ability to tap into global talent pools, and access to a variety of funding sources, small and medium size companies are now becoming the innovation ‘incubators’ for many industries.  This is not saying that large companies have stopped innovating.  They are!  It’s just that smaller companies are nimbler and can therefore succeed (or fail) faster.  Having personally advised small companies from the concept stage, through prototyping, to product commercialization, and ultimately acquisition, I know that TTM (Time To Market, or Time To Money!) is extremely important to every business.

Prior to joining Xinova, I created and directed Intel Capital’s Technology Licensing Group, a business that monetized technology assets in markets such as healthcare, transportation, cloud services, communications, and manufacturing.  I’ve also held senior management positions within Intel’s ‘Internet of Things’ and ‘Design Automation’ Groups; as well as ran manufacturing/operations early in my career at AMD.

I’m an investor, adviser, entrepreneur, and board member for companies focused on Internet Security, Advanced Manufacturing, Analytics, Services, Compliance, Entertainment and Advertising.
