The R:GEN system, backed by patents from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), benignly removes damaged retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. Damaged RPE cells cause agerelated macular degeneration (AMD) and other diseases that lead to a loss of vision. The R:GEN system can destroy RPE cells selectively by inciting micro-cavitation in them through a laser in a way that leads to the re-growth of healthy RPE cells and restored vision. The MGH patent technologies allow the R:GEN system to detect micro-cavitation events in RPE cells, which generates information used to control the dosage of laser light. Inventions are sought that improve upon the MGH patents.
