This RFT (Request for Technology) seeks innovative solutions that will reduce the effects and impact of Grass Seed Infestation (GSI) in sheep and lambs.

Grass seeds get caught in sheep’s wool, moving into their skin and deeper into muscle, fat, and connective tissues. GSI causes a myriad of problems for farmers and processors from lower quality products to potential death. In the Australian market alone, GSI causes annual losses of AUD $47.5 MM. During this 30-minute webinar, RFT manager Gregory Caire described the problem being addressed and the scope of this RFT. As always, there was a Q&A after the main presentation. 

Problem Definition

Grass Seed Infestation (GSI) is the migration of sharp seeds from problem weed species and some pasture grasses into the wool, hide and meat of sheep. GSI causes significant financial impact on the entire front end of the value chain, especially to producers and processors and negatively affects animal welfare.

The spring flowering of grasses (or significant rain events after drought) leads to the production of seeds. By late spring and early summer, these seeds dry out and harden sufficiently to move through wool and penetrate the hide surface. Eventually, they migrate deep into the hide and into the muscle, fat and connective tissue of the animal. This results in a whole host of problems for producers, processors, and sheep alike.

Request For Technology (RFT)

Many preexisting technologies are underutilized and can be applied in more than one function, yet most of these technologies get left behind to clutter on shelves.
