Failure sucks.
Most of us avoid it at all costs.
It can be expensive, depressing, and kill your motivation to go on.
That’s not true for everyone.
Inventors and innovators embrace failure. While they don’t enjoy the moment of failure, they understand that each failure is a step in the process for innovative success. In fact, if you’re not failing at an overwhelming rate, more than 80 percent of the time, then you’re probably only coming up with incrementally clever ideas. True innovation that allows for industry disruption requires going outside of normal boundaries into the unknown.
At the 2018 IRI Annual Conference and the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) SBIR/STTR Phase II Grantee Conference in Atlanta, I asked the attended innovators and inventors what they absolutely LOVE about failure.
