Fun fact: Xinova’s Pioneer Square headquarters on the Occidental Mall, built shortly before the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896-1898, was a commercial hub for outfitting and provisioning the so-called “stampede” of gold prospectors. The Klondike Gold Rush entrepreneurial spirit echoes through Seattle’s innovative culture today.
Our esteemed startup community is driving the latest inflection point along Seattle’s distinctive continuum of innovation. A 1997 article in the Economist posited the previous century’s gold fever instilled an enduring entrepreneurial culture. Examining the rise of Microsoft, Starbucks, Boeing, Nordstrom (launched by a Swedish immigrant who struck gold) and others, the Economist said Seattle “is remarkable for its golden touch” as the city supported “standard-setters in their industries.” We agree. The Seattle startup scene is still golden.
